I have traveled the United States by
car, train, bus, plane, canoe, and
even hitchhiked...nothing compares with traveling on two wheels!! What
surprised me was the 'smells' of the open road: the unmistakable salty
smell of the oceans when we were nearby, the rich earthy smells
of the Mississippi Delta, the sweet smells of the jasmine and
magnolias, the sharp, pungent smells of the industrial areas, the smell
of rain on hot asphalt, the dry, gritty smell of a hot dusty
desert...so hot it can sear your lungs, the clean, refreshing smell of
a new morning
not yet kissed by sunshine, the smell of walnut, pistachio and pecan
trees in West Texas, the strong, overpowering odors of the stockyards,
the sweet 'green' smell of new mown hay, the stifling fumes of
thousands of vehicles in Los Angeles and
Houston, the stench of garbage and human refuse that littered the
streets of West Hollywood and Juarez Mexico....the smells of the open
road. We traveled 6187 miles from
Florida to California, an experience I will treasure for a lifetime and
will gladly repeat at a moment's notice.
